In an extract from excellent new book ‘Joe Fagan, a reluctant champion’ ANDREW FAGAN and MARK PLATT recall the drama of the 1984 European Cup final, where Fagan’s Liverpool side took on Roma in their own stadium

For the first time in the competition’s history the destiny of the cup would be decided by a penalty shoot-out. Tottenham had won the UEFA Cup by similar means a week before, but the only other high-profile game to have been decided this way was the European Championship final of 1976 between West Germany and Czechoslovakia.
