We all recall our first World Cup with vivid and fond memories - mine was Argentina ’78 shortly after my 11th birthday.
The pull of your first finals is so strong it hardly seemed to matter that England had failed to qualify. This was in sharp contrast to the only other time in my watching of World Cups that they were not invited to the coolest party in town, USA ’94, which felt devastating when the Dutch stole our invitation.
